Mary Morton Hillix died peacefully in her home on August 7, 2010. She was born in St. Joseph on December 14, 1912, to Joseph Morton and Pearl Jane King Morton.
In 1936, she married Charles Nelson Hillix, who preceded her in death.
A graduate of Central High School and Lindenwood College, she also attended Northwest Missouri State University and Missouri Western State University. For a number of years, she taught fifth grade at Edison School.
Mrs. Hillix was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church. She served on the United Fund Board, the Buchanan County Welfare Commission, and the board of the Child Guidance Center. She was a member of the Junior League of St. Joseph, the St. Joseph Historical Society, the St. Joseph Symphony Society, Performing Arts, and the St. Joseph Museum. Active in Girl Scouting for many years, she was a member of the first Girl Scout troop in St. Joseph. She was very fond of her home town, and in her later years was often consulted for her incredible memory of people and places there.
